In class on 2/3/03 I mentioned that usually an alcohol will have a broad O-H stretch (and strong as well) in IR spectroscopy. This broadness is due to hydrogen bonding. If the IR spectrum on an alcohol is obtained in a solvent under dilute conditions, the O-H stretch will be much sharper and not as strong. For a demonstration, check out this web page.
